My Father and I: Interview (Excerpt)
2 min 4 sec 2019 This excerpt of an interview I conducted with my father is about his most vivid memory, in which a significant part is associated with my grandmother preparing a packed meal (dosirak/도시락) for him everyday. This video work portrays an attempt at forming a closer bond with my father through conducting the interview and reenacting my grandmother's gesture of cooking. |
My Father and I (Excerpt)
1 min 10 sec 2019 My Father and I depicts my personal father-daughter relationship by using the traditional skill of Chinese calligraphy as a metaphor for my attempt to be closer with my father. Although I attempt to mimic my father’s Chinese calligraphy practice sheet using traditional materials of brush and ink, I also deviate from the technicalities of Chinese calligraphy in working on the wall and “drawing” the characters, rather than “writing.” The work portrays the inevitability that no matter how much I attempt to form a closer bond with my father, there will always be a generational gap and a difference in cultural upbringing between us. |
Family Name (Excerpt)
1 min 45 sec 2017 This exploratory performance work was one of several projects from a 2-month residency in Feijiacun, Beijing, China. I mimic my father’s Chinese calligraphy sheet using traditional materials of brush and ink in an attempt to relate to him, while also deviating from the complex technicalities of the practice by “painting” the characters on the wall rather than “writing.” In this excerpt, instead of 金 (Chinese for "Jin", the equivalent of "Kim") like my father wrote, I paint 김 (Korean for "Kim") to comment on the fact that although I am from the most common Korean family lineage that intermigles with Chinese history at its origin, I feel a disconnect as a Korean-born Canadian that can speak adequate Korean and no Chinese. I expand on my family name using oil paints, a medium I am familiar with as a result of my upbringing to convey the inevitable slow erasure of generational knowledge as we continue to move forward with time. |
